The Harriet Taylor Mill Institute aims to make women visible as actors and wants to illuminate gender dimensions in scientific research and practice. In the early years, the institute mainly focused on economic issues. Since 2011, a second focus lies on "Gender in Law and Administration" in order to promote critical research on legal effects on gender relations and the (re-)production of inequalities.

The institute is committed to link gender relations and economics as well as law and administration. Gained insights are being transferred back into teaching, the scientific community, and the interested public. The main activities consist of third-party funded research projects and publications, integrating gender issues into the curriculum at Berlin School of Economics and Law, and hosting events to promote exchange between scholars and practitioners, business and universities, and all interested actors.

The Harriet Taylor Mill Institute for Economics and Gender Studies (HTMI) was founded in February 2001. It is named after Harriet Taylor Mill (1807-1858), British economist and pioneer of the women’s movement. The institute is part of the Berlin School of Economics and Law (HWR Berlin).

Establishing Gender Studies as a vital part of economic research has been on the agenda of HWR Berlin ever since the school adopted its study and research focus "Economics and Gender Relations". After the merger of Fachhochschule für Wirtschaft (FHW) and Fachhochschule für Verwaltung und Rechtspflege (FHVR) to HWR Berlin, the Harriet Taylor Mill Institute has expanded its research on gender issues in law and administration.

The Harriet Taylor Mill Institute is the only scientific research institute in Germany bringing together scholars of economics, management, sociology, computer science and law who carry out interdisciplinary research on economics, law and administration.

The institute is funded by the HWR Berlin.

The Harriet Taylor Mill-Institute for Economic and Gender Studies was founded in February 2001. It carries the name of a British female economist Harriet Taylor Mill (8.10.1807-3.11.1858), a founder of the women’s movement.

It is an institute within the Berlin School of Economics and Law (Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Recht Berlin), which is the only economic university in Germany that has such an institute.

The Institute is funded by the HWR Berlin.
